What is STEAM?

Play-Based Learning involves the use of different themed play-settings which encourage children to explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. The inquiry-based nature of play allows children to engage in STEAM activities. So what is STEAM? STEAM is the future. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. These are all areas of learning that our kids need to be comfortable with to excel in the future. STEAM makes creators, thinkers, problem solvers, doers, innovators, and inventors. Exposing kids to STEAM activities and experiments at an early age today sets a foundation for higher learning tomorrow.

  • Science activities include exploring water and sand in our mud kitchen , going on a bug hunt with magnifying glasses, and mixing colours on our water wall.

  • Technology occurs when playing with cars and figuring out how the wheels turn or playing on the light-box.

  • Engineering in preschool happens in the block area where children plan and design structures everyday.

  • Process Art is art that is child-directed. In process art, the final product is always unique and the focus lies in the creation of the work, not the outcome.

  • Math activities include matching shapes, counting units and measuring quantities and volume during messy play.
